Welcome! I’m Martin Benum, a retired professional with about 40 years of experience in the Ontario electricity industry. Throughout my career, I've held various roles, from accounting and regulatory affairs to consulting and advisory positions, allowing me to develop a deep and comprehensive understanding of this dynamic field.
Before retiring in April 2022, I served as the Director of Regulatory Affairs at London Hydro, where I oversaw regulatory accounting, rate applications, and IESO settlement processes. My role also involved active participation in key industry groups, including the Electricity Distributors Association (EDA) Regulatory Council and the Ontario Energy Board Regulatory Affairs Standing Committee.
My journey in the energy sector began with foundational roles in accounting and regulatory functions, including a significant period at the Ontario Energy Board (OEB). These experiences provided me with a thorough understanding of the legislative framework, rules, and guidelines that govern Ontario's energy industry.
In addition to my regulatory expertise, I have extensive experience using Microsoft Excel and Access VBA to streamline processes, perform complex data analyses, and develop custom tools for better decision-making. Recently, I have been particularly intrigued by the advancements in Excel’s Power Query, which offer powerful new ways to analyze and manipulate data efficiently.
I have a strong interest in interrogating consumer electricity meter data for billing and rate verification. Understanding the nuances of this data is key to ensuring fair billing practices and optimizing rate structures. The introduction of AI and its potential to advance knowledge in the Ontario electricity realm also fascinates me. I am excited about how these technologies can transform the industry and enhance the way we approach energy management and policy development.
Now, in my retirement, I continue to share my passion for the energy sector by offering consulting services and insights to those looking to navigate its complexities. Whether you're a utility, a stakeholder, or simply interested in the energy industry, I'm here to provide guidance and support based on decades of experience and a keen interest in the latest technological advancements.
Let’s connect and explore how we can work together to contribute to a brighter, more sustainable future for Ontario’s energy industry!
